A man caught with 30 000 mandrax tablets valued at over R1 million was on Thursday granted bail of R100 000 by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. Zolile Zikalala’s alleged accomplice, Katlego Phatlane, was also granted bail, of R50 000. Their bail application was not opposed by the state.

Both men are from Soweto. Magistrate Nitesh Binessarie ordered that they refrain from communicating with any witnesses in the matter. If they have passports, he ordered that they must surrender them.

The investigating officer, Hadley James Holland, said in an affidavit that on October 7, he was on duty in civilian clothing conducting investigations in the Pietermaritzburg area when he received information about a suspect transporting a large quantity of tablets, suspected to be mandrax, driving a white Ford Ranger en route from Gauteng on the N3 towards Durban.
