Two shops on East Street, in the Pietermaritzburg CBD, were completely gutted on Wednesday after protestors allegedly set them alight.

The owners watched helplessly as people looted their shops, taking all their stock and stripping the shops’ fittings.

The owner of AK Discount Supermarket, Masud Alam, said his was the first shop that was set alight. He said he had lost stock worth R500 000 in the fire.
