Police had to be called in to disperse protesters on the R56 near France, in Pietermaritzburg, on Friday morning.

The community who blockaded the road say they have been without a constant source of power for two weeks now.

The residents filled the road with rocks, tree branches and glass bottles.

They say they are frustrated and want an audience with their ward councillor and the mayor.

Police had to throw stun grenades to disperse the crowd gathered resulting in all community members fleeing.

The community is currently retaliating by throwing stones and other items at the police.

The R56 is a major arterial route to Richmond and Ixopo and beyond.
