One man was rushed to hospital during a cash-in transit robbery at the Edendale Crossing centre, Pietermaritzburg, on Monday morning.
It is alleged that the man was knocked by a vehicle while attempting to flee the scene.
According to witnesses who were at the mall, it is alleged that five heavily armed men tried to rob a Fidelity security officer who was carrying a box full of cash.
A source said a shoot-out occurred between the security officers and the five men. He said the men fled the scene without anything.
“These guys apparently abandoned their getaway vehicle, which was parked on Edendale Main Road. They then ran towards the back of Plessislaer Police Station. One guy, who had a huge gun, was knocked by a car while attempting to run and that delayed him,” said a witness.
It is alleged that the guy gave up running and fell down as soon as he saw a Fidelity car approaching him.
“The other three guys had already run through the nearby houses, and they tried to come back and help the other guy who was limping. But, soon after they turned back and ran away when they saw the security vehicle approaching,” said a witness.
Police are at the scene and the alleged getaway vehicle has also been recovered by the police.
