No injuries have been reported after a massive truck fire broke out on the N3 Eastbound, on Monday morning.
Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson, Zinhle Mngomezulu, said recovery operations were underway on Monday morning on the Orthman Road off-ramp in the left lane so there might be delays.
“Traffic was backed up because there was poor visibility due to smoke and fire. The truck also had oranges so that might have also played a part in the slow moving traffic,” said Mngomezulu.
People have descended onto the scene to take the oranges that fell out from the truck.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are still underway but suspicions are that the truck’s middle brakes overheated.
“If you are driving down that road there is a lever a driver is supposed to change to drive properly because the road has a deep slope. We are not saying he did not do it but the way the way the fire burned (from the centre of the truck) shows that brakes were the problem,” said Mngomezulu.
RTI members were on the scene.
