A prescription anxiety drug is gaining popularity with local addicts who are finding it more affordable than other street drugs, as it sells for as little as R2,50 a tablet on Pietermaritzburg’s street.

Xanax/Alprazolam, which is a pill used to treat the panic and anxiety symptoms associated with panic disorder, belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. It works by enhancing the effects of a natural chemical in the body.

Young people, who call it “zane”, have been using it to get high.
