Once a formidable force in ANC national politics, the ruling party in KwaZulu-Natal now finds itself in danger of being reduced to a spent force.

The province, which back in 2007 used its power to get other ANC provinces to rally behind then deputy president Jacob Zuma in his quest to topple former president Thabo Mbeki, has been in decline since around 2016.
