As background, the Sexuality and Gender Division (SGD) of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA) represents the interests of psychologists and members of broader society who work with mental and social health matters relating to gender (including gender inequality, gender violence and gender diversity) and human sexuality (including sexualities education and sexual diversity) through the lens of social justice.

Titled “Breaking boundaries safely”, the article by Alleyn Diesel in The Witness on August 25, repeatedly suggests that trans people are detransitioning in “increasing numbers”, implying that trans identities are unreliable or, in concert with the main thrust of the article, that trans feelings and sentiments in young people are being manipulated by irresponsible mental and other health practitioners. These young people are “frequently encouraged to resist and even scorn their parents’ advice”.
