As with all things Brexit, the Christmas Eve deal that theoretically signals the end of the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union offers much obfuscation and little substance.

Many have warned that trying to work out the details will provide a headache well into the new year, and anyone who imagines that Brexit can now be retired as a news item is being naive. One of the reasons for this is that while Brexit was always a political project, and an ill-conceived one at that, it is the economics of the deal which will matter.
