Broos names squad for Ugandan Cranes

Young Maritzburg United striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane will need to overcome an ankle injury soon to return to club action and then possibly his maiden Bafana Bafana duty.

New Bafana coach Hugo Broos named a 19-member squad, including Hlongwane and clubmate Thabiso Kutumela, to play the Ugandan Cranes in a friendly international match on June 10.The match will be played at Orlando Stadium and kicks off at 6 pm.

Hlongwane missed Maritzburg’s last game through an ankle injury and will be eager to get fit soon.

There will be two club matches in the DStv Premiership before the Bafana match. The match against the East Africans will be the first for Bafana Bafana since the final Afcon qualifying match against Sudan in Khartoum in March which South Africa lost 2-0.

The friendly match with Uganda is part of Bafana Bafana’s preparations for the upcoming Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

South Africa are in Group G, together with Ghana, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.

True to his promise when he was unveiled as Bafana Bafana coach, Broos has named a squad comprising mainly of up-and-coming players to play Uganda. The coach, who won the Afcon title with Cameroon, said his immediate aim was to build a squad which would compete for things in coming years.
