After narrowly escaping death in a horrific car accident, Pietermaritzburg swimmer Michael Duckham is grateful for his “second chance” in life and is eager to boost his career in America.

The 19-year-old athlete from the Hayfields suburb in KwaZulu-Natal’s capital will be jetting off to study at the Southwestern Oregon Community College on Sunday.

Duckham, who completed his matric at Durban’s Westville Boys High School, received a swimming scholarship from the overseas college, where he will juggle sport with Sports Sciences studies.
