South Africa’s plucky off-road stars and their international rivals will complete the immense Dakar Rally on Friday with a relatively short stage.

Their final 164 km stretch of racing in Stage 12 from Bisha to Jeddah concludes a two-week, 4 000 km trek over Saudi Arabia’s sands, dunes and stones.

This is their last chance to improve their overall standings in their respective race categories, but the character of the stage suggests that not too much will change at the finish, at least not among the cars, unless some unexpected mechanical issues should emerge.
