The coach of South Africa’s new swimming star Matthew Sates, Wayne Riddin, has opened up about the tough, and sometimes controversial, challenges of producing champions from teenagers who have to juggle school and blossoming sports careers.

Riddin, who has been a swimming mentor for 43 years, has overseen another success story in helping fellow Pietermaritzburg resident Sates (17) qualify for the much-anticipated Tokyo Olympic Games starting on July 23.

Sates is a matric pupil at St Charles College in the city, which Riddin has commended for always being in support of Sates’ swimming, unlike some other schools with their pupils, he says.
