The final day of the 2020/21 GladAfrica Championship season wasn’t without drama on Sunday.
Royal AM scored a stoppage-time penalty to draw 1-1 with Cape Town All Stars at Chatsworth Stadium and earn the point they needed to clinch the title and automatic promotion to the elite division.
Samuel Manganyi held his nerve from the spot to move the Durban club up to 51 points — a point ahead of Sekhukhune United of Limpopo, who beat JDR Stars 3-1 at Giant Stadium.
No trophy handover
But there was no trophy handover amid the pending dispute involving Sekhukhune and the Premier Soccer League (PSL), which could see them awarded three points and top-flight status at Royal AM’s expense.
A statement by the PSL said they had been “threatened and served with court papers in relation to an arbitration award handed down impacting the GladAfrica Championship table”.
Richards Bay FC secured a place in the promotion play-offs by thumping Steenberg United 4-0 to climb up to third.
Steenberg and Bizana Pondo Chiefs will be relegated for finishing in the last two places in the standings.
Raja hammer Pirates
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates were hammered 4-0 by Raja Casablanca in the Caf Confederation Cup quarter-finals, second leg in Morocco on Sunday night.
The teams drew the first leg 1-1 in South Africa last weekend.
Raja will face Pyramids of Egypt in the semi-finals.
