Sunday’s Hope Challenge under the Comrades Marathon brand had an impressive 30% increase in the final week, recruiting a total 14 484 entries across the five distances from 5 km to 90 km.

Virtual Challenges have been around since around 2015 in China, where in 2019 they were attracting 300 000 runners to a single event and over 34 million in four years. Covid brought this “run at home” format to the fore globally, giving runners the hope of a racing return.
