Beware of the coconuts

London - Coconuts are much more dangerous than sharks, according to a London travel insurer who on Monday advised holiday makers to take out cover for the more bizarre risks that travellers encounter.

In 2000, 79 people are known to have been attacked by sharks, with 10 dying, three of them in Australia, according to the company.

Club Direct says coconuts kill around 150 people worldwide each year, citing a study by Peter Barss, a professor at McGill University.

"Coconuts kill 10 times more people than sharks. People may worry about being bitten by sharks on holiday, but statistics show they would be better advised not to sit under coconut palms," Club Direct director Brent Escott said. - Sapa/DPA
