Johannesburg - For the first time in the history of the South African Music Awards, winners will not only take home the much coveted Sama, but also a financial reward courtesy of main sponsor, Standard Bank.

"By providing winners with some form of monetary reward, we believe the awards will take on a new dimension and a higher profile, explains Duma ka Ndlovu, chairperson of the Sama committee.

"The Samas are 100% dedicated to the growth of South African music and while the awards have already provided an important element in the creation of a competitive and healthy music scene, we believe giving money as part of the Samas is an easy and effective way to prolong artistsÆ careers as well as further encourage South African musicians to continue making the best music in the world."

Providing the money is main sponsor Standard Bank who will be giving the following amounts to Sama-winners, whether a group or solo artist, in each of the categories:

  • R5000 per award in on of the 37 judged categories.
  • R10 000 per Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • R10 000 for the Song of the Year winner.

"The popularisation of South African music is critical to the development of the South African music industry," says Standard Bank sponsorship director Lyndon Barends. "It is therefore important we acknowledge, encourage, develop and ultimately reward our musicians."

The finals of The Standard Bank South African Music Awards will be a star-studded and glamorous affair to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre on April 5.
