Ethiopians sweep medals in 3 000m

Stuttgart, Germany - Olympic champion Million Wolde led an Ethiopian podium sweep over 3 000 metres for one of five 2001 world best results at an indoor athletics meet.

The 5 000m gold medallist from Sydney outkicked compatriots Girma Tola and Hailu Mekonen to win in 7 minutes 37.99 seconds. Tola had 7:38.48 and Mekonen 7:38.95 minutes.

Women's Olympic 5 000m champ Gabriela Szabo was also unstoppable over the mile in 4:23.19, but was then lucky to escape an injury when German long jumper Kofi Amoah Prah accidentally ran into her when he was gearing up for his fourth attempt.

The long jump saw a world indoor best from Olympic champ Ivan Pedroso with 8.17m. Russian Ludmila Galkina also recorded the year's longest leap in the women's edition with 6.84m, leaving only second place for the 1992 and 2000 Olympic champ Heike Drechsler (6.74m).
