First Geraas award ceremony

2001-11-06 13:47

Cape Town - Anton Goosen was honoured with a life award for his contribution to Afrikaans music at the first Geraas Music Award (GMA) ceremony.

At the same event the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival was nominated as the best music event of the year.

The GMA gala event, presented on Monday night at Montecasino's Le Toscana Restaurant without any financial support from the music industry, is aimed at acclaiming artists for their work and contribution to local music.

Amanda Strydom walked off with two of the most sought after awards, one for Best Afrikaans Album and one for Best Contemporary Album. Both awards were for her album Op 'n Klein Blou Ghoen.

The public was involved in the GMAs by voting over the telephone for the song of the year and best live show by an artist. In the first mentioned category Juanita du Plessis's Ska-Rumba was chosen and Theuns Jordaan was nominated best live stage artist by the public.

The voting by telephone started on September 21 and the last votes were still cast on Monday.

Organisers said the award ceremony was organised to boost the Afrikaans music industry and also to support local music. The most important element however, is that artists get the recognition they deserve.

A broad spectrum of original South African, but more specifically Afrikaans music, is surveyed. RSG (Radiosondergrense) and SABC2 supported GMA by introducing the public to all the different categories and the nominations in each of them.

Television viewers can see all the winners during the regular Geraas timeslot on November 9 and 15.
