Johannesburg - Former doubles ace Pietie Norval, who with Wayne Ferreira won Olympic silver at the Barcelona Games in 1992, was on Tuesday named as head coach of a new tennis academy in the Western Cape town of Spier.

The Academy of Tennis Training, endorsed by Wayne Ferreira and South African Davis Cup captain Craig Tiley, will cover all aspects of the game.

The Wayne Ferreira Trust Fund will finance talented players from disadvantaged communities to attend the academy as well as international tournaments.

The academy will also allow players to continue their studies.

According to a press statement by MSM sports management company, who established the academy with the winelands town, some top players in Europe were keen to train at the academy in December to prepare for the Australian Open in January.

The academy will start with a school holiday tennis camp from July 9-14.
