Metro Fm and South African cellular service provider MTN have joined forces to launch new music awards for South African artists.

The first Metro FM Music Awards ceremony will be held in Johannesburg on October 20. The winners of the Awards will be chosen by the public who will be able to vote for their favourite South African artists in ten categories.

"It has long been a dream of ours to launch these music awards, because as a leading music station we canÆt afford to stand apart from our music industry. The Metro FM Music Awards provide the opportunity for our listeners to honour their favourite South African artists. Thanks to the support of MTN these awards are now a reality," said Romeo Kumalo, Metro FMÆs station manager.

Organiser say they will take their cue from æthe edginess and magnitude of the MTV and Brit awardsÆ but the awards will be a strictly South African affair in terms of both content and style. These music awards are the ôfirst awards in the country in which the public will decide the winners based on a popular majority vote.ö

Said says Sen Mdhuli, Prepaid Brand Manager at MTN, ôMTN is about getting South Africans talking and listening to one another. As a result we clearly see the value in being involved in a South African award ceremony that is based on the people in this country expressing themselves via a phone call.ö

The awards are given to popular artists/groups and therefore there are no awards for specific albums, nor are the awards time specific which means that it is based purely on current popularity, even if the group or artist hasnÆt done anything new in recent times.

From the 11 to 22 September you can nominate your favourite artist in any of the categories. Results will be tallied and the four most popular nominees of each category will go through to the next round of voting.

From September 25 to October 6 people will be able to vote for their favourite amongst the four nominees in any category. At the end of this voting session the votes determine which artists will walk off with the Metro FM Music Awards.

For those who take part in the voting process there is the chance to win prizes from MTN and Metro FM. The main prize up for grabs among voters will be a chance to win a trip for two to the 2001 Grammy Awards being held in New York.

Each category has its own 083 MTN Voteline and the leader in each category will be announced on Metro FM each day. The following categories have been chosen as they are representative of the music genreÆs played on Metro FM:
