Sydney - Gareth Blanckenberg, racing a Laser, tasted victory at the Sydney Olympics on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Capetonian won the fifth race in the Open Laser Fleet at Rushcutter's Bay in Sydney Harbour - a feat that, combined with his 11th in race six - elevated him to ninth overall after hovering around 15th for most of the week.

"The conditions were more to my liking," said Blanckenberg of the stiff wind that swept over the harbour during his victory event.

He left overall leader Ben Ainslie trailing to to fourth over a minute down in the fifth race.

Ian Ainslie, competing in his third Olympics for South Africa, opened his Olympic sailing mission in the Finn class with seventh in the first race, followed by 17th in the second which earned him 17th overall with seven races to go. - Sapa
