Milestone episode for Simpsons

"Ay, Caramba!" Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie Simpson are appearing for the 300th time on television.

The 300th episode of The Simpsons appeared on American television screens on Sunday.

This cult cartoon family, from Spingfield, is in its 14th season and has been a hit with viewers since it first burst on to screens.

Matt Groening created the dysfunctional TV family as a series of short films for a comedy show.

When The Simpsons first debuted in 1990, doomsdayers cried it was the end of Western Civilisation.

It came under attack early on, especially for Bart's vocabulary, which includes such phrases as "Eat my shorts" and "Don't have a cow man".

Now The Simpsons is the most-honoured and best-loved series in television history.

With a contract until 2005, the cartoon is set to become the longest running comedy in American TV history.
