Athens - Two weightlifters from Azerbaidjan have been banned from competitions for life after testing positive for drugs, in the first two doping cases of the Athens Paralympics, officials said here on Wednesday.

Goundouz Ismayilov and Sara Abbasova, who were to respectively compete in the men's 90kg and the women's 82.5kg category, tested positive for steroids, the International Paralympic Committe said.

Ismayilov, 31 was caught using banned substance stanozolol. Nandrolone was found in the urine sample of Abbasova, 28.

The two athletes had in the past been punished with a 2-year ban for using illegal substances.

These are the first two doping cases to be revealed out of 335 drug tests conducted since the Paralympics began on September 17.
