Last man makes it home

Durban - Schalk Grobler, a 42-year-old chemist, running for the Irene club, was the lucky finisher as last man home and earned himself his fourth and precious Comrades medal

But for Julie-Ann Malho of Edenvale, it was heartbreak as she was denied her first ever medal. She was beaten at the line by the pistol shot.

The 80th Comrades Marathon run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban ended at the 12 hour cut off mark at 17:30 on Thursday.

As usual there was a tremendous last minute surge for the finishing line as stragglers by the score battled to win a bronze medal to show their children, grandchildren and other interested parties in the years ahead.

For many it was a triumph. For many others well its always a case of next year.

The last runners were encouraged to draw on all their remaining strength, stamina and willpower by the playing of the music from the film Chariots of Fire, the national anthem of long-distance runners everywhere.

In all there were 11701 successful runners, made up of 9701 men and exactly 2000 women.
