Johannesburg - The Western Province-Boland cricket franchise is expected to appoint Shukri Conrad as coach.

The Highveld Lions coach declined to comment, but confirmed that he has applied for the vacant post.

"We will have to wait and see who will become the WP-Boland coach. I am the Lions coach at present," he said.

Conrad was apparently on the shortlist along with Omar Henry, Richard Pybus, Eldine Baptiste and Barney Mohammad for Peter Kirstens' post.

Kirsten was the first coach of the Cape franchise, but his contract was not renewed after a disappointing season.

Thirty-eight-year-old Conrad is seen by many experts as a future national coach. Even though his contract with the Lions only expires at the end of March, he will be allowed to accept another post.

Conrad's biggest success as coach was when the Highveld Lions won the Standard Bank Cup two seasons ago.

As the first Lions coach, the franchise qualified for the semi-finals of the Standard Bank and Pro20 series last season.

The Lions, Titans and Warriors will all have to cast the net wide this week to find new coaches.

The Warriors' Mickey Arthur has been appointed national coach, while the Titans did not renew Dave Nosworthy's contract.

Only two of the six teams will start the second "franchise season" with the same coach - the Eagles' Corrie van Zyl and the Dolphins' Phil Russell.

Their teams shared the SuperSport Trophy last season.
