Cheetahs pick Jannie on bench

2007-10-20 16:11
Johannesburg - World Cup prop Jannie du Plessis has been included in the Free State Cheetahs squad of 22 for the Currie Cup rugby final against the Golden Lions in Bloemfontein next Saturday.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske, as his counterpart from the Lions Eugene Eloff has promised to do, has stuck with the players who took the Cheetahs to the final, losing only one from 15 matches on the way.

It is a side filled with Cup final experience. Ironically, experienced former Springbok centre Marius Joubert, who joined the Cheetahs from Western Province this year, is one of only four players who has not featured in a Currie Cup final. The others are the new flank sensation Duanne Vermeulen, prop Kobus Calldo and replacement back Tewis de Bruyn.

The inclusion of Du Plessis on the bench for experienced former Springbok prop Ollie le Roux is the only change from the Cheetahs side that beat the Blue Bulls in the semi-final last weekend.

Le Roux this week left for Ireland, where he will play for Leinster. His new club would not grant him permission to finish the season with the Cheetahs.

The Cheetahs side is: Alwyn Hollenbach; Eddie Fredericks, Marius Joubert, Hendrik Meyer, Gavin Passens; Willem de Waal, Falie Oelschich; Darron Nell, Duanne Vermeulen, Hendro Scholtz, Corniel van Zyl, Rory Duncan (capt.), Kobus Calldo, Richardt Strauss, Wian du Preez.

Replacements: Jaco du Toit, Jannie du Plessis, Barend Pieterse, Heinrich Brussouw, Kabamba Floors, Tewis de Bruyn, Meyer Bosman.
