Fans flock to see Stoner

Melbourne - Australian MotoGP organisers are increasing grandstand capacity to cater for huge home interest in Australia's world championship leader Casey Stoner.

The 21-year-old Ducati rider Sunday won the Czech MotoGP in Brno for his seventh win in 12 races this season, extending his lead over seven-time world champion and championship rival Valentino Rossi to 60 points.

Australian race organisers keen to cash in on his popularity, released plans on Monday for expanding capacity at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, south of Melbourne, for the October 12-14 race.

Drew Ward, chief executive officer of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, said the performances of Stoner and his fellow Australian Chris Vermeulen had created "a massive groundswell of interest" in the 2007 MotoGP.

"With our present grandstand ticket offering almost full to capacity, we are delighted to announce that we will be extending each of the four grandstands for the October 12-14 race," he said in a statement.

The new release of tickets will increase grandstand capacity by almost 40% on the total number of seats available for last year's race.

Ward said sales of grandstand tickets were 153% up on the same time last year.

"Not since the glory days of (Australians) Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan more than a decade ago have we seen such attention focused on the Grand Prix," he said.
