Bafana date with Tunisia confirmed

2004-07-28 11:28
The South African Football Association has confirmed Bafana Bafana will play Tunisia in Tunis on August 18.

Bafana coach Stuart Baxter wants to play the friendly against the current African Nations Cup champions away from home in preparation for the vital 2006 World Cup qualifiers in DR Congo and Uganda later in the year.

South Africa?s last foray into Africa ended with a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Ghana in Kumasi in June.

"Those two World Cup qualifiers will be crucial. It was important that we meet top class opponents away from home as preparation," Baxter told News24 on Sunday. "I realise that Tunisia are not identical in their style of play. But we could not ask for better than a friendly against the African champions in their backyard."

Baxter will be able to choose a squad packed with overseas stars for the game as it falls on an international week for European nations, who will be involved in their own World Cup qualifying campaign.

Whether or not that squad will include Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune should become clear after Baxter meets with the exiled international this week.
