Currie Cup format revised

2002-06-27 20:35

Johannesburg - The Currie Cup competition will revert to a two division format with promotion and relegation from 2003.

SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd on Thursday agreed on the criteria that would be applied to determine the composition of the respective sections when the country's domestic competitions were restructured in 2003.

The restructuring of the competitions forms part of a recently-approved SA Rugby strategy that aims to restore South Africa's position amongst the world's leading rugby nations.

The competitions affected are the Bankfin-Currie Cup, Vodacom Cup, SA Cup and a new National under-20 Tournament, which replaces the existing under-19 and under-21 tournaments.

From 2003, the Bankfin-Currie Cup reverts to a strength versus strength format.

It will feature two sections, a top section of six and a lower section of eight. A double round of matches will be played with the top two teams in each pool qualifying for the finals.

There will be automatic promotion and relegation.

The log positions for the 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons will be used to determine the make-up of the Bankfin-Currie Cup sections in 2003.

These will be weighted 15% each for 2000 and 2001 and 70% for 2002.

The SA Cup will be played along similar lines to the Bankfin-Currie Cup with the sections of six and eight reflecting those of the Bankfin-Currie Cup. In the competition, a single round of matches will be played and the promotion and relegation will mirror that of the Bankfin-Currie Cup.

The 2003 Vodacom Cup will have two sections of seven teams with a single round of matches played. The log positions for 2001 and 2002 will be used to determine the sections with a weighting of 30% and 70% respectively.

The new under-20 competition will feature one section of six and another of eight, with a double round of matches.

Because the present under-19 and under-21 events are already based on strength versus strength, the 2002 results will be used to determine the sections for 2003.

There will be a 50/50 weighting between the under-19 and under-21 event.
