Wellington - Former All Blacks lock Norm Maxwell announced his retirement from all rugby on Tuesday, two days after turning 30.

The veteran of 36 Tests, Maxwell said injuries made retirement inevitable.

"It gets a lot harder when you can't give as much as you want to, so it's time to give up," Maxwell said.

An aggressive lock with unusual athleticism, Maxwell made his Test debut in 1999 and quit international rugby after the All Blacks' 43-5 win over France in Paris in 2004.

He played out his career in Japan.

"All of it was an awesome experience," said Maxwell who won four Super 12 titles with the Crusaders.

"The Test matches are always going to be stand out in the mind."
