Johannesburg - Springbok scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen officially took over the captaincy at the Blue Bulls on Wednesday after flanker Ruben Kruger was ruled out of Friday night's Currie Cup game against the North West Leopards at Loftus.

Van Der Westhuizen will lead the side for the first time since the 1998 Currie Cup final, where the Bulls beat Western Province and takes the Bulls into a match where they desperately need the five points on offer.

Other than the change in captaincy, the Bulls have made three changes to the side that lost on Sunday to the Border Bulldogs for their game against the Leopards. Kruger's concussion means a call-up for A-team captain Arno Barnard, while Schutte Bekker's torn knee cartilage will see young Danie Rossouw anchor the back of the scrum.

At wing, the injury to Rhyno Hendricks which saw him leave the field against the Bulldogs, means that another youngster, Brendall Brandt, will line up against the Leopards on the wing.
