Johannesburg - South African media on Tuesday reported that Nigerian goalkeeper Uche Akubike is in a Johannesburg jail after being implicated in a marriage scam.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who was in the provisional Super Eagles squad for the 1998 World Cup in France, last season played for a club in South Africa before moving to Vietnam.

South African officials have been trying to crack down on foreigners marrying South African citizens to be allowed to work in the country and Akubike was allegedly implicated.

It is claimed that he was arrested after he failed to remember the name of his wife and the day of his wedding.

"Immigration simply handed him over to police after he could not remember important details of his marriage certificate which would have allowed him to live and work in South Africa," an official said.

He has been in jail for three weeks.

Although he is only 24, Akubike has already played in several countries, including Algeria (USM), Cameroon (Canon Yaounde), Serbia and Montenegro (Hajduk Kula) and Faroe Islands (Sandoyar Itrottarfelag). Sapa-dpa
