Elkington to skip Medinah

2006-08-16 12:11

Chicago - Former champion Steve Elkington was one of four players to withdraw from the 88th PGA Championship on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old Australian, who captured the 1995 PGA Championship in Los Angeles, said he was pulling out because of personal reasons.

Elkington was joined by Australian Mark Hensby, American Bo Van Pelt and Wayne Grady, of Australia, who opted out for various reasons.

Van Pelt pulled out because of the birth of his third child and was replaced by Bob Estes.

Hensby was replaced by Charles Warren and Billy Andrade stepped in for Elkington.

The tournament lost its second former champion Tuesday when Australian Grady withdrew with a wrist injury. Grady captured the 1990 PGA Championship in Birmingham, Alabama. His place goes to Jonathan Byrd.

Like Elkington, Hensby withdrew citing personal reasons. Six years before joining the PGA Tour in 2000, a homeless Hensby lived out of his car in the parking lot at Chicago's Cog Hill, the site of the tour's Western Open.

Darren Clarke had pulled out previously to be with his wife Heather, who was battling cancer. She died on Sunday.

Paul McGinley, who is a close family friend of the Clarke's, withdrew on Monday, returning to Europe for the funeral.

Daniel Chopra and Craig Barlow replaced McGinley and Clarke.
