McGinley withdraws from US PGA

Chicago - Ireland's Paul McGinley withdrew from the 88th PGA Championship on Monday, following the death of the wife of his close friend and fellow golfer Darren Clarke.

Clarke's wife Heather lost her battle with cancer and died in a London hospital on Sunday at the age of 39.

"Our two families are very much intertwined, obviously me and Darren, but also Heather and Ali (McGinley's wife) were the best of friends and our kids are in the same class at school," McGinley said.

Sweden's Daniel Chopra will take McGinley's place in the 156-man field.

Former Ryder Cup star McGinley said he pulled out so he could attend the funeral.

Clarke had already withdrawn from the PGA to be at the side of his wife who valiantly endured a two-year struggle with the disease.

Clarke said he would return to the game "when he feels ready."
