16 days of activism 365 days a year

2013-11-28 10:39

I have been scrolling social media and looking for those who are promoting the 16 days of activism, I’ve heard shocking stories in the news, and as usual I want to promote it myself.

I don’t want to merely promote 16 days though. I want people to realise that domestic violence occurs all year round. It certainly escalates at the festive season, but in the worlds current economy women and children take the brunt too.

If I could highlight one thing it would be that you never turn a blind eye. Too many times do I see people post that their neighbours are having repeated violent arguments – and way too little times do I see them taking action and helping the victim.

Victim’s lives wilt away while they put on a brave face.

They lose their identity.

While you think everything has gone back to normal… it hasn’t really… they are in fact fading away in front of your eyes.

Please take a stand. Take a stand all year round.

Don’t let a child’s potential be extinguished because you never thought they would be suffering. The long term effects on children’s lives are unjust, and excessive. Take it from someone who has been there.

Remember too that a bruise can heal, however the long term effects of verbal abuse, torment a survivor for years.

You can turn a blind eye… the victims don’t have that luxury.

They live – in fear --scared to make a turn in the wrong direction. They know clearly what the consequences will be.

The consequences could quite easily result in their death.

Please think of them – put yourself in their shoes.

Before you say “I don’t want to get involved” please imagine being so afraid that your kindness will be a reason for a beating. Imagine living with a constant pain and still having to do daily chores. Imagine being denied the simple pleasure of freedom - freedom to move freely in your own home.

Abusers take away the simplest things to make a victims life unbearably difficult.

Think.

Feel their pain.

Act.
