6 reasons you want to live in a world without money

2016-04-11 08:30

What would a world not driven by money look like? And what are the reasons you’d want to live in a world without money?

Money is a powerful driver in the modern world, and for the most part, we’ve elevated it to the point of necessity. However, the truth is that money is not necessary to how we live our lives or structure our society.

So take a walk with me as we imagine a world without money, and what that will mean for our day-to-day lives.

1. People will perform more menial jobs

In a world without money, we’d place our focus on getting the basics done first – people housed, fed, clothed and taken care of medically.

So it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine a world where everybody is expected to contribute a set amount of working hours per time period, and they are assigned where needed to complete the necessary tasks. A growth in population at this stage would most likely mean less time spent working overall for each individual.

Many of the jobs at this level would be menial – sanitation, water supply, growing food, cleaning up, restoration of homes and buildings, electricity supply… many of the jobs would be chore-like, designed to keep the societal structure up and running.

For many people nowadays, career choices are all about the social ranking of what they do and the potential for earning. Without these drivers, many people would choose only to do their menial chores for society and focus their time on family or other creative and learning pursuits.

2. People will choose work they love

Where people do choose to go into fixed vocations, you’ll find that it is because they love and are drawn to this work.

Without the financial and social status drivers behind them, you’ll find healers drawn to healing and medicine, teachers drawn to teaching and the spiritual placed back into temples where they can uplift the community at large and contribute meaningfully.

In addition, we’ll more than likely see huge surges and advancements in these fields, because the people operating here no longer have limitations like ‘does the client want this’ or ‘can the client afford this’?

Take away the financial limitations of each person and you have a medical field that can pull out all the stops to save the lives of every person who needs help – not just those that can afford it.

3. More time and energy for family

The endless treadmill that most of us are running on daily leaves us very little time to enjoy the families we clothe and house.

When survival is taken off the table as an issue, you’ll find that you have more energy to spend with your family – more time to enjoy them in.

Likewise, your working time contribution will be much more limited than what it would be in a free economy, which will give you more time to spend on your family – instead of all the time you dedicate to trying to make ends meet at the moment.

4. The majority of your stress disappears

How much of your modern stress is made up of survival issues? How am I going to pay the bills, buy food, pay rent, pay my creditors?

Take away the survival issues and all you are left with is your health, relationships, spirituality and how much you will grow and express yourself creatively going forward.

How much easier would your life be if you never had to worry about money, food, medication or a roof over your head? How much happier would you and your family be?

How many of the other stressors in your life are driven by the money/survival issue as well? What other areas of your life would become easier?

5. Education becomes more practical

Without the mad scrabble for wealth and social standing – as well as securing your future – we wouldn’t place half as much emphasis on education.

Children that don’t cope so well with academia would be offered more practical learning in line with what they’ll be doing when they’re older, and what they’ll need to know.

Children and adults who are academically, scientifically, technically and medically inclined could be earmarked and given suitable education that will enable them to further their knowledge. Adults wishing to study further at a later stage could also easily be accommodated for.

It would also be feasible that work training would be more intern-like, on-the-job training, where knowledge is passed down from those more experienced.

6. Unnecessary stuff will fall away

Our lives and the world are littered with unnecessary physical attachments, many of them things we buy just to fill the unrelenting loneliness and sadness that pervades many of our lives.

Many of these items have been created to fit into trends and get people to part with their money immediately - and in a world without money there would be no reason to make these items in the first place.

When the choice is ‘do I make money to eat at the end of the week’, then making something unnecessary seems a logical choice, if it will fulfill that need.

When the choice becomes ‘do I stay here and make this or go home and spend my free time with the people I love’, then you can bet no one is going to sit around making unnecessary gadgets. They’ll already have what they want – time to live with the people they love.
