A plea to the born free generation!

2016-08-29 06:00

Dear Born frees - You are commonly referred to as the children who were born post 1994.  You did not grow up in an Apartheid era.  You have no experience of the ‘Old South Africa’, yet you still segregate yourselves, shun each other and blame the modern South Africa.  What went wrong?

Your parents and grand parents fought for you to be able to have a bright future in an equal society.  Yet here you are…  Spitting in their faces, protesting, having tantrums over things you were expecting to fall in your lap.

Have you no honour and respect?

You are now young adults, supposed to be paving your future for generations to come.  Of course some of you would’ve had the ‘Old’ mentality taught to you by those parents who still cling to an era never to be seen again.  But that is not an excuse.

Greek philosopher Heraclitus said: “The only thing constant is change!”

Get used to it! Embrace it!

Have you not attended school with one another, have you not had the same education as one another, did you never talk to one another?  Did you not share the same pride for the school you represented on the sports field? Or the achievements and awards you’ve earned through teamwork?  Did you never sing along as a group or cheer on your athletes, your soccer teams, netball teams, hockey teams, rugby teams etc?

None of you can claim to not have been part in at least one of the above examples!  That alone is enough reason to continue as you were in the days as a child.  Then why all the plunder and barbaric demeanor now that you have come of age?  Why continue to revert back to the past that you were not part of?

Only YOU can change what is happening around you!  Only YOU can decide where this is leading!  Not alone, but as a generation that shared the same dreams of hope, happiness and success in a free country!

Stop blaming each other, stop blaming colour, stop blaming culture.

If you really have to, blame politics!  None of you represent your generation in politics yet and if you don't try you never will.  The current political parties do not think about your future!  They only think about their future!  Soon they won't be around anymore and you will have to take the reigns.  Only YOU can do that, only YOU can make a difference!

Not through burning down institutions, not through pulling down monuments and protesting, but through working hard at being who you are.  Put aside ‘Old’ ideologies. Create your OWN ideology!

Remember your unity as children, respect your differences, show the world it wasn't all in vain and that you actually care. Otherwise your future and the future of South Africa is doomed to return to the stone age.

Be proud to be South African, love your country and each other...!

LIVE the dream, keep up the HOPE, work hard, and you will reach wealth and success!
