A Time For Sober Reflection

Confronted with issues of moral urgency that demand the taking of principled positions, as a country we tend to aggregate our views to racial jingles. Without any form of examination, matters are collapsed to the size and shape of race.

So there was Zelda la Grange the former personal assistant of the great Nelson Mandela tweeting and micromanaging her illusions and her worst fears in public. The union of Nelson Mandela and Zelda was an ideal of South Africa we imagined.

The country has not as yet clicked. Certainly it was not going to be that simple that a country that was the symbol of bitter segregation, and rush rush the two races (the African and the White) can come together carry on as if everything is hunky dory, forgive and forget – thank you.

We broke the principal tenet in psychotherapy or soul healing which says: The first step in seeking help for psychological problems is to accept the stigma. The goal of psychotherapy is to help the patient develop insight—that is, an understanding of the deep rooted and deep seated unconscious causes of the psycho-social ills.

We skipped a critical phase in our national life. Wole Soyinka, the first African Writer to achieve the Nobel Peace Prize on literature in his book: The Burden of Memory takes a deeper look at the past, how the past always arrest the present thus giving us the past in the future. And so we go in circles.

All human beings stereotype people from other groups; it is the brain’s shorthand way of dealing with complicated reality. Pure non-racialism does not exist in the mind of a human being. Each race has flippant stereotypes of other race.

Within South Africa on the Internet mostly social media you get clear cut examples, the major races the Africans and the Whites there are always in constant warfare: Each group tries to outdo the other in a bitter race to put down the other group. They seem to do these things unconsciously; that is, as if they are not thinking about it.

For example a phantom anonymous white person may post comments on the internet bragging and showing that he is superior and how Blacks have destroyed the country. But within a few seconds a Black man will come behind spitting fire showing that the White person is a common criminal; he stole the land; he used black folks as slaves; he is by every definition a thief, a criminal at an advanced stage.

The real purpose of your behavior is its end results on the people receiving it. If your behavior makes people who receive it feel belittled that was exactly what you wanted to do, belittle them regardless of what is in your conscious mind.

If you continually attack people they would feel psychological pain and anticipate your attack and feel defensive.

Whites came into Africa and took advantage of Africans’ technological weakness to use them as slaves, colonize them and later create Apartheid; that does not make Whites a superior people; in fact, it makes them an inferior people, another person may view or consider it that way. So what are you doing and achieving because the fact is all races are the same?

I have always worried about obsession with yesterday to the detriment of tomorrow.

All in all you come to the reality that despite the Africans and the Whites with all their hard efforts to rubbish, through mud and paint each other in the most negative light none of them succeeds in getting the other to change their minds.

They say that insanity is doing the same thing, over and over, again, obtaining the same results while expecting different results.

The salient point to take is that the human mind is prone to seeing members of other groups in stereotypical manner.

Love generates love, respect generates respect, and insults generate insults. What do you want, love and respect or hate? I want love from every person so I must love and respect every person.
