Act of ludicrousness

2013-01-29 19:02

When its working fine, don't fix it! That's the advice I am inclined to give to DR Sibongile Zungu regarding the offer to buy out McCords Hospital, situated in Overport, Durban as reported in the news!

McCords Hospital is a state subsidised semi private hospital that is 101 years old! It withstood the ravages of colonialism and apartheid and historically has been a thorn on the side of the government of day. First it was the NATS now its the ANC.

In an act of reported ludicrousness and in the face of the managed closure of Addington Hospital, government has announced that it will withdraw its R83 million subsidy in March 2013! Lets do the maths here. They shut down, ostensibly to embark on the upgrade of facilities at Addington, surgical wards and clinics which they farmed off to Wenthworth,King George and Mahatma Gandhi Hospitals and of these only King George is performing reasonably well.

This is mind boggling! Whoever thinks up these bizarre shotgun approach to a crisis neds to be criminally investigated for he or she is certainly engaging in criminally negligent behaviour!

Addington is being pounded to the ground to make way for the next phase which is decommissioning and sale to some rich capitalist enrepreneur who,a little bird whispered to me intends putting up a hotel and private apartments for our budgeoning billionaires!

With the only state subsidised private/public hospital that provides a high standard and qualitative life saving service, which is the next best thing us poors can afford since private hospitals are unaffordable to over 65% of the population, why not continue subsidising it and let it continue? This makes sense! Before it was taken over by the state, the once private St Aidens Hospital provded one of the finest services but now, like Addington it is slowling beginning to crumble!

Why buy something that will eventually deteriorate with the incredible level of incompetence and mismanagement that epitomises Addington Hospital? When will civil society organisations wake up before our ailing health system flat lines?
