An alternative view of the alleged coup in Turkey

2016-07-24 10:43

My colleague and friend  Mohamed Saeed has submitted Hail to the protectors of Turkey on the coup in Turkey. My view is on a different orbit and I argue differently that Turkey is sliding towards the odious period we know as the Inquisition.

Hence my question  :Are we witnessing the Turkish Inquisition in the making and is it already happening? I think so.

Recent developments in Turkey commencing with the alleged terror attack in Istanbul followed by the failed coup which culminated with President Erdogan suspending the ECHR and purging some 70,000 people, for their alleged Pro-Gulen stance without the benefit of due process has got me thinking.

I'm reminded of the first documented widespread use of what is referred to as the "dispositional view" to understand what is rendered evil and to rid Turkey of the pernicious influence of the Gulen Movement. During the Inquisition it had a name, Malleus Maleficarum, or the Witches Hammer.

To reduce the spread of the evil that the Gulen Movement is maligned with the proposed solution was, like the Inquisition times, find and eliminate anyone however remotely connected or supportive of Fethullah Gulen.

Erdogan had a problem. There was the democratic Constitution of the Country and Turkey's subscription of the European Convention of Human Rights. Solution? Declare a state of emergency following the putch and suspend, like France did,the operation of the ECHR which now allows government to bye-pass the requirements of due process and which allows use of torture against deemed witches or enemies of the state aka adherents of the Gulen Movement.

Just as such reduction of complex issues regarding evil fuelled the fires of the Inquisition by making "witches" a despised dispositional category, by similarly rendering Fethullah Gulen and his movement, provides Erdogan with legitimacy and a ready solution to the problem of the evil by simply destroying as many agents of Fethullah Gulen as could be identified, tortured and killed through the death penalty.

The trick is to marginalise those perceived as a threat so as to obtain consent of the people which in stages is what the Erdogan government achieved.

Sociologist C Wright Mills (in "The Power Elite", 1956) wrote about a "power elite" a group of men and women in positions that enable them to 'transcend the ordinary environment of ordinary men and women' who are in position to make decisions having major consequences.' They don't usually do the dirty work themselves.

Someone nondescript usually in their payroll does the job. When they want to destroy someone they turn over their brief to propaganda experts to fashion what Phillip Zimbarbardo (author of " The Lucifer Effect") terms " to fashion a program of hate."

To make a people hate another people with such toxicity requires what Professor Zimbardo refers to as a " hostile imagination", in other words a psychological condition embedded so deeply in the minds of the people that in their estimation what they are being fed with must be true and they become, just as Daniel Goldhagen posits in the book by the same title " Hitler's Willing Executioners".

Supporters or adherents of the Gulen Movement already tainted with allegation of links with Mossad and the CIA  face tough times ahead and with the media muzzled Erdogan has a free reign and they have become akin to vermin worthy to be eradicated.

Judging from the flourish of articles on line with such malignant consistency against Fethullah Gulen and anyone associated with or supportive of him I get the sense the propaganda is on target.

So is there a Turkish Inquisition happening? I think so.
