An Open Letter to Helen Zille

2014-08-26 20:17

Dear Helen Zille

I hope this letter finds you well.

Your Leadership Has Failed The Young Lions Of Your Party.

August and September are SRC election months at the University of the Witwatersrand; this is the time that the various organisations and political parties fight it out for the votes of students. However your honourable DASO is nowhere to be found, they have completely disappeared from public debates and seem to be chasing the shadows of the PYA (ANCYL) and the EFF. The way DASO is run is similar to how Manchester City and Monaco is run in football. All of your time is spent on recruiting members in the mother body of your political party and the youth leadership remains neglected and underdeveloped.

The ANC and the EFF, as much as the EFF’S policies are questionable, are doing one thing right and that is that they are developing their future presidential candidates at youth level. This I believe is a something that you can learn from them, especially given the fact that last year DASO won no seats in the SRC election, this makes them irrelevant and weak opposition to the more dominant opposition such as the ANC and EFF.

DASO’S candidates are humiliating to you and your party. I believe that being controversial is great but if it’s not strategic controversy it is foolish.

Practically as I don’t support your political party, I suggest that you engage with your youth league and provide leadership to them as we would like to compete with political parties that are at the very least an opposition to us at every level.

It is important and beneficial to young people, political parties and society in general that the youth are mentored and are developed to become future presidential candidates.

The DA is the official political opposition party in South Africa, which puts their youth wing in a position of power to bring change to a country to the youth. The youth of today are not involved and are not encouraged to get involved in politics because they view political systems as irrelevant and they feel like political leaders have failed them. The youth is more concerned about social status, attending events and staying in the lime light while the real issues are being fought on the ground. In fact you never hear about Mbali Ntuli and the rest of the DA youth wing until its voting season. The media stint involving Mbali and Madam Zille makes one question if the DA youth league is actually in synchronisation with its mother party. It makes us question if Mbali is just there to fill another position to attain votes, or if she is there to impact the youth in this country who is anticipating a young vibrant leader to take the lead.

We as the youth of this country would like to see a stronger opposition from the DA youth wing, we would like the DA youth wing to become more involved in matters that are relevant to us like attending funerals of our young children that are being murdered due to gang violence. We would like to see the DA youth wing on the ground in townships helping the poor and not just on social media platforms. It’s easy to let your fingers do the work while sitting behind a screen for the sake of giving an impression that you are active while the youth of this country is on a road of destruction.

Kind Regards
