ANC, EFF or DA: Who is the Master 'Bad' Dog at Spinning Sheep?

2016-02-09 18:47

Which political party is dominating the propaganda battle for the local election? Which political party is controlling the narrative? Which party is demonstrating that it is better at shaping the citizen’s perception? Which party is able to manipulate their thoughts? Which party better understands the majority’s emotional fault lines? Which party can agitate, bewilder and send them into retreat – back to the safety and protection of the old and familiar herd? Which party will ultimately direct the majority’s behavior with ease at the polls?

Granted, the ANC may not be champions at getting the right things done in the right manner in government, but do not underestimate their skills and ability to execute in this game of deception. And in contrast, what a dreary campaign start by the DA? “Vote for Change”. “Vote for Jobs”. So at the head, so logical, so rational, like the innocence of a child that places his or her newly found faith in sound argument and morality. Like scholars at a math convention discussing calculus. “Vote for Change”. “Vote for Jobs”. What an unhelpful and complicated idea this is when the threat is those racist white capitalists - those racists who stole and keep the land.

What a bunch of evil geniuses the ANC plotters are. What experts at harnessing and wielding that old social force, the race card, like a brilliant neurosurgeon with a new laser blade, slicing and shaping the thought of gullible citizens with precision. How cool they are at exploiting the racial divide. How persistent they are at treating this hotspot, vigorously scraping at the scabs, opening up those old wounds till it touches, no cuts, at those raw nerves. And now, wounded and panic-stricken how predictably the majority galvanizes behind the ANC.

The ANC have taken their aim at the heart of the public and have captured it. And now they have begun to occupy their mind. Their slogans are invisible, but can be heard. “Don’t support racism’; ‘Support land back’. The DA, well DA = DAnger. DA: Cannot be trusted. Anti-racism has come to mean anti-minority, and therefore anti-DA.

Filter the news. Fix the discourse. Use the exciting new, digital space. Manipulate the press, radio, television, and social media. Use the Dark Lords of Influence to circulate this belief. And keep this story simple and elegant. Play on emotions. Begin the tale with the Hate of the eternal enemy and end with the Love of the romantic tribe. Tell a story of fear, seduction and desire.

And their hammering away at this story seems to be working. They are harnessing the herd. “Vote for Jobs” will not work. What is easier? Focusing on your financial hardships or finding someone to blame for your position. “Stop Corruption” will not work. Too many syllables. The message must be simple and primal. It must play on that fight or flight instinct of the voter. It must not be intelligent: it must be cunning.

Watch the US elections: It is sleaze, falsities, distortion, selective and biased views that the public desires not the real issues. Entertainment, not education. This is how the ANC bad dogs are paralyzing the public into submission. And what about the EFF and the black sheep (usage: idiomatic and hopefully still politically correct)? Well, the ANC’s troubled offspring and once decoy party now with a taste of success plays in the same sleazy propaganda league, but with dangerously higher doses of cheap sleaze. They are part of a niche strategy. Thought farming of the radicals and conversions of those fence sitters among the majority. These are the nasty games you must play to win in the vote market.

The good news is that South Africa has come a long way since its first elections. We should be happy, that it is Propaganda and not the Panga that is being used to fight this election (But that could easily change). The other good news is that many young people don’t vote, and are seeking other tactics to make government work. They have lost faith in a party based system that largely seeks to serve the interests of party members (But this is another story for another day).

On the matter of who is the Master Bad Dog at Spinning Sheep, the ANC has shown yet again that since they can control the emotion of the masses they can also control their perceptions and behavior. And all it takes is a simplistic story of love and fear.

So far, I score the ANC an “A+” for being a masterful bad dog, EFF a B+, and the DA a mediocre “D-”.

Love and fear, Dear DA. Love and fear.

Take a lesson from our very own St Valentine, his Bad Dogs and the Dark Lords of Influence, while a few of us watch in amusement.
