ANC Election Campaigning is Shaping Up

2017-06-12 15:50

Cyril Ramaphosa has circled the important nodal points of the country in his bid to win the ANC presidency. And he appears triumphant, but there is a great deal to be worried about.

Ramaphosa's initial strategy failed. His initial strategy has been that there should be one slate for ANC presidential election. “We need one slate of a representative ANC that represents the views, dreams and aspiration of our people. We don’t want to have many slates; we only want to have one ANC slate that will take this movement forward,”

That appeal has failed. It will not happen. Come December, Ramaphosa’s name will be just another name among other names on the ANC presidential ballot paper.

Seeing that the strategy has failed, Ramaphosa retreated and deployed another strategy: piling pressure on the ANC to get him elected or else... the ANC faces doom. He is giving the ANC an ultimatum. His backers in Cosatu has said: We think if they go for the deputy president, we think that would unite the ANC. We are helping the ANC in this case. "We are not coming up with somebody who is not at the top of the list of the ANC".

In suggesting that only people at the top echelons of the ANC should participate in the elections is an appeal to cronyism and the rejection of democracy and spiting on the ANC constitution that says any ANC member in good standing can be elected into national positions. Further this shows the characteristics of elitism that Ramaphosa is known.

All these things shows that Ramaphosa feels threatened and not at ease.

Further after all the vicious campaigning we don’t have a clear view of what Ramaphosa will do or stand for.

If a person has been a deputy president and waiting with the burning desire to become president after 5 years I would hope that by this time that person should have some tested ideas for moving his organization from point A to point B. So far Ramaphosa has shown he has no inkling of the responsibility of leadership, or he is too busy gorging to care.

Zeroing your campaign on the fact that you should be the only person on the ballot paper marks of selfishness.

Cyril Ramaphosa should stop whining and tell us what he is going to do. He needs to raise the logic and talk about what he will do for the ANC and the country. For example he has knowledge and experience about the miserable conditions in our mines. What are programmes in place to address the plight of poverty stricken miners in places like Marikana? Political campaigns should revolve around the personality and biography of the candidate. Ramaphosa became who he is because of miners, as the labor leader of a union that represent miners. But his leadership among miners was tested and found empty during the Marikana massacre.

Matthews Phosa has said that having one candidate anointed leading to the elective conference is the very poison that must be curbed. He believes having many candidates on the list is healthy for ANC internal democracy and for the advance of the common good.

Further Matthews Phosa with his brief campaigning has outlined his key theme and what he wants to achieve: Spent money on the poor.

And so is Lindiwe Sisulu, she has outlined her plans of revamping townships and releasing land. "We have set ourselves to transform our urban spaces as well as industries. Municipalities will be required to prioritize the provision of infrastructure".

This is what political campaigns should be about: to raise strong ideas that are aimed at changing society, in terms of the quality of life of the citizens. It should not be about yourself.
