Another extremist judgement on Comrade Chris Hani

2016-03-12 09:00

There are so many dumb decisions being made in the courts these days that I have lost complete faith in our so-called justice system.

Chris Hani was most likely going to be the second president of the democratic South Africa. The charismatic leader of the SACP was thought by many to be Mandela’s successor.

There was obviously popular respect for him among many of his comrades. He was a strong critic of corruption, careerism, nepotism and professional and dynastic politics that have always plagued the ANC.

He also fought against the secret trials, and executions and generally inhumane treatment of M.K. members. It was only through the intervention of Oliver Tambo, that he and his supporters were not executed or thrown into dungeons.

He sacrificed a significant part of his life fighting in the frontlines against the SANDF and their allies. He is also reported to being a calming influence over the alliance's more militant members during SA’s transition.

We still do not have full disclosure into the death of Chris Hani. Why did these white extremists assassinate him in the driveway of his modest, middle class home? Why did they rob this husband and father of his plans of a future with his family?

The country at that point was at the brink of a civil war. Was this by design? If so, who then is ultimately responsible for his death? Do you really expect some of us who are more rational to believe in the findings of the TRC? Not all of us believe that some priestly man in a dress is going be able to extract the truth from criminals. Not all of us expect these court judges to be objective and leave their Sunday school teaching out of their decisions.

In any event, given our history, why should we offer clemency to white extremists? Would it be humane and rational if Israel gave clemency to a Nazi? Would it be rational if the US gave clemency to a 911 terrorist? Given the scale and magnitude of their actions, why should we forgive these cowards?

In a country still plagued by incidents of white extremism, racism both crass and subtle, what kind of message are the courts sending to the citizenry?

Can someone please get rid of these checkbox idiots?

Sometimes, I think it is possible for cold algorithms in computer systems to make more humane decisions in our courts.

Sometimes, I feel like our justice system is actually a nuthouse.
