Apathy to child bullies creates adult criminals

2013-07-18 11:14

Once again I am sitting in the midst of yet another post bullying dilemma.

I am angry to the point of my wits end that schools couldn’t be less bothered to ensure the safety of their students.

Why do they make it such a task to get vindication for a child who is a victim?

I realise fully that the offender could rightly have some or other trouble at home, which in the long run is causing him to act out and get the attention he craves.

The offender still deserves punishment! The victim still deserves vindication, peace of mind that when he returns to school – he will NOT be bullied again and again.

What kind of future does our country have if schools cannot control the students in the class room? Should these “teachers” be teaching at all?

Discipline begins at home – yes, for sure – BUT if you cannot control a classroom full of children you do not belong there.

So I am told that break times are a problem. “Large scale children and minimal teacher visibility”. Well damnit if you want a well run school; bet your butt out of the staff room; take your cuppa tea; and ensure the children’s safety. This is what you are being paid to do! Or is the teaching “profession” not a job? Parents are paying school fees; exorbitant ones at that; and their children deserve to get the service their parents worked hard to pay for! Whatever happened to “the consumer is always right” when it comes to schools?

I have been contacted by so many parents who say that – “the school says that the parents are a problem” – Parents are going to be a problem if you as a school have no intention of educating, and protecting the minor children in your care. That is what it is. Pre scholars, primary scholars, and early high school scholars, these are minor children. They are not adults and they should not be treated as such. The apparent apathy of principals and those in charge is abhorrent and reeks of a failing educational system.

I am tired of going to sit in the principal’s office like a naughty school girl when my child is the victim. This is a time for action; there is no room in our community for apathy.

I was once told that the teachers know my child better than I do because they spend a good six hours with him. I see this as proof that this particular teacher couldn’t be bothered about knowing my child. If he had taken the time to know my child, he would have the factual evidence at hand. As a mother who works from home I keep afternoons open and spend dedicated time doing homework with my children. We do chores together and we spend quality time together. I am a dedicated mother who finds pride in seeing to my children’s needs whether they fall under love, empathy, toughness or discipline. There is a time for everything in the world and I think that this is the time that victims get the good deal, the peace of mind, the vindication, the attention. How many hours does that add up to Mr Teacher? Far more than you can count.

The offenders need to be punished, end of story. We do not need to be creating more criminals to send out into the real world. Young bullies need to be confronted and dealt with NOW, as young BULLIES, prior to their crimes becoming bigger and more evil and ending up increasing the already full and needing to be expanded prison population. Which brings me to reinstating the death penalty – or testing products on criminals; but that’s a whole other story.
