The article: “Dubai shattered the world record for the largest ever pyrotechnic display on New Year's Eve with a show involving more than half a million fireworks, has reference. (News24, January 1).

Dubai and the Middle East in general have millions of poor citizens and immigrants as workers and it’s quite ridiculous to waste 60 million dollars just for an entry in the Guinness book of records.

The oil wealth of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman is matched in equally high levels of suffering and poverty in other parts of the Middle East- Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen just to name a few.

Surely this wealth could be much better spent on the many millions of hungry mouths, refugees, homeless and the underprivileged who need it more than the tourists and holiday makers.

It is absolutely clear and no one can doubt that the wealth of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is not productively used. Most of it is squandered in building palaces, sky scrapers and living super luxury lives by the ruling class.

The Oil and gas that is the source of this wealth, could easily become the saviour for many human beings around the globe. The oil is not the sole possession of a ruling family or individual or Sheikh but it belongs to the whole Ummah (Muslim Community).

The distribution of food, water, clothing, shelter, housing and wealth to the most needy is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “blessed is the wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, the orphans and to needy travellers”. (Bukharie).

There are numerous examples from the books of Islamic history as to how the successors of the Prophet distributed the available resources for the benefit of humanity. The Caliph Umar Bin Abdul Aziz ensured that the needy did not go to sleep without food and water. He distributed wealth to the needy and abolished unjust taxes. His methods were such a success that when the time came to distribute the Zakaat (compulsory charity to the needy), the state treasury could not find a single poor person or anyone in need of it.

The rule of the Muslim world under the companions of the Prophet is filled with examples of empowering communities, a just social order, the alleviation of suffering and poverty and a life of dignity for all.

What can our current Muslim leaders show? With all the petro- dollars; Palestine and Masjid Al Aqsa is still in the hands of the Zionist, fierce civil wars prevail over most Muslim land, most economies are ruined and people live under autocratic and tyrannical governments.

The leaders of the Muslim world need to use the plentiful wealth and resources at their disposal to uplift humanity, not only in consumerism, fun and games but in every aspect of life.
