Are protesting student leaders rewriting the freedom charter?

2016-10-06 18:04

Dear Student,

I am not going to indoctrinate you with my learned skills from the West and my privileged position as an educator and researcher. I am not going to circulate the hegemonic ideologies of the West to you, at least not today (As if the issue is that simple).

In this test, I will simply assess your knowledge on the contents of the Freedom Charter. There seems to be some confusion about its content.

So answer, which of the following statements are found in the Freedom Charter?

a. All the cultural treasures of mankind shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands;

b. We will decolonize this Western higher education system. We will replace it with indigenous afrocentric knowledge;

c. The aim of education shall be to teach the youth to love their people and their culture, to honour human brotherhood, liberty and peace;

d. We will disrespect academic leaders, use hate speech and violence, and damage property to get what we want now;

e. Higher education and technical training shall be opened to all by means of state allowances and scholarships awarded on the basis of merit;

f. We want higher education to be free for all now;

(Answers: a; c; e)

Given that answers a, c, e is correct, please explain to me what the fuss is about?

The Freedom Charter is clearly a visionary document penned by reasonable leaders with great intellect.

Are protesting students arguing that the Freedom Charter needs to be rewritten? Have student political leaders even read the Charter? Their amendments, based on recent rhetoric, stated in b, d, and f, are clearly unreasonable.

This is all so confusing. Perhaps I should go read something from the past. The past is much richer in valuable lessons.

I invite you to join me.
