Are we entirely blameless, my countrymen?

2016-09-03 11:18

After listening to the inexcusable, pathetic and appaling explanation regarding  the recently released crime stats  by Police Minister Nathi Nhkeko, the one question in every discerning citizen's lips is " Why is he still in office? ".Minister Nhkeko must be fired.Period.

However, we too need very serious introspection as well.We can't escape the reality that SA is one of the most unequal societies in the world. Nor should we forget the disastrous band-aid attempt through the politically mediated TRC to settle 350 years of oppression and dispossession in SA.

Are we entirely blameless, my countrymen and women for the state of our nation?

We were conned into buying into the process as a solution to achieve social justice for the oppressed. This is what I read into the recently released crime stats.

So what can we do as citizens in SA?

You and I need to advance social equity through our individual as well as collective agency.

That's what the very  fine print  in our Constitution asks of us. If you not sure I suggest you read the Bill of Rights again. Very carefully this time.

It's encapsulated in one holy word highlighted on a few occasions by our Constitutional Court.

Google it and you'll find it enshrined as a foundational value informed through equality, freedom and human dignity.

Yes, so advancing social equity  as well as a socially inclusive society n South Africa idealised by the Constitution is a function of a good democratic state, for the one part, and the individual and collective agency of its citizenry, for the other.

You and I. Individually and collectively.

We cannot continue to be in denial that its our obligations as citizens to lend a hand instead of pointing fingers and retreating into our high walled, Maximum C prisons we affectionately refer to as homes.
