Aren’t you tired of feeling (& being!) poor?

2014-02-19 09:24

If you’re into personal development and growth, or even if you’ve just been on the Internet in the past few months, you’ve in all likelihood heard the term Global Poverty Consciousness bandied about.

Blame it on the newsmongers, blame it on Obama, blame it on the job losses and high unemployment rates, blame it on whoever you want to in fact… it doesn’t change the fact that people are feeling the pinch financially, tightening their belts more than they thought necessary and are just generally down in the dumps about the future and their financial security.

The fabled 1%

With all the protests going on in the States over the past few years, we’ve all become aware of the 99% and the 1%... who have 99% of the money… well apparently anyway.

It doesn’t really seem to matter what’s going on around them or what the current situation is, these people seem geared towards making money. And if they already have money, they just seem to be able to increase that wealth.

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why the rich are getting richer?

Why are there some people who make it, build companies in an economic crisis and just seem geared to create success regardless of what seems to be going around them? Have you ever wondered what sets these people apart?

Mind over matter

The bad news is that the answer to why the rich keep getting richer is exactly what you think it is: they have the right attitude and mindset. The good news is that you can develop a healthy and positive attitude and mindset around money – a lot quicker than what you actually think.

The Secret and other similar books about positive thinking have certainly introduced a whole new spectrum and approach to how we look at our lives and how we approach and do things. Among the biggest changes have been the mainstream acceptance of elements like affirmations and positive thinking.

From Christian teachings to personal development, positive thinking and affirmations seem to be all the rage nowadays. Everyone’s doing it, everyone’s talking about it… so why is there still so much chaos and drama going on in the world?

It’s all in the follow-through…

It really doesn’t help to spend five minutes every morning rattling off a bunch of affirmations and positive intentions while you’re rushing through breakfast and trying to organise the kids.

Well, it does help a little bit… but what really makes the difference is what you spend the other 23 hours and 55 minutes doing every day. There’s a fantastic quote by Lao Tse, and it reads:

“Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habit.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

So what are you thinking for the other 23 hours and 55 minutes of the day? How do you speak, how do you act?

Are you a person that complains a lot? Are you intolerant of others? Are you perhaps quick to negate people or make derisive comments?

Would it make a difference if I said to you that every negative thing you think, say or feel about another person actually contributes to the general atmosphere in your life? Would it make you think twice about what you think or say or feel about people, the world and life around you?

Well, it should really… because everything you’re thinking goes onto a path that creates the destiny that becomes the story and history of your life. Even when you flip the guy off in traffic.

Every. Single. Thought. Counts.

You can say a million affirmations every day (if you have the time of course!), but if your thoughts and what you say and do throughout the rest of the day do not support that, your efforts are truly in vain.

However, it doesn’t end there though….

Take action!

If you get past the fluff and actually read books like The Secret properly, the often-glanced-over fact is that once you’ve put your intention out there you have to take decisive and committed action.

So, if you want a new job you have to put your CV together, properly and professionally. Then you have to go online, find vacancies, apply for them and attend all the interviews, looking and being the person that the company will actually want to hire.

If you want to own your own business then you have to register the company, save the money you need to be able to survive without an income for a while… and once you’ve taken the plunge you have to jump in with both feet and do everything you can think of to make it work – maintaining a positive mindset the entire way.

In the case of something as big as the Global Poverty Consciousness, it’s going to take a little bit of group action on all our parts….

A man arrives in small town on a business trip. Like many small towns around the world, this place has been impacted by the global economic crisis and times are a little tough.

He arrives at the hotel on a cold and rainy and night and gratefully pays over his accommodation fee before the innkeeper shows him up to his warm and cosy room.

The door has barely closed before the innkeeper hightails it over to the local grocery store, where he uses the money he’s just received to pay the grocer his outstanding account. Food deliveries have to happen if his guests are to be fed after all.

He’s barely out the door before the grocer locks it behind him and rushes out to settle his account with the local lady of the night. She’s thrilled to receive the payment, because it turns out she owes the innkeeper for rental on rooms.

As she leaves from settling her outstanding bill with the now delighted innkeeper, the guest who arrived earlier comes downstairs to inform the innkeeper that he will no longer be staying the night as his schedule has changed.

The innkeeper, relieved to have settled his debt, refunds the man gladly and the businessman goes on his merry way.

No one profited, no one made huge amounts, but a whole lot of debt was settled that night – easing the burden and stress on a number of families throughout the small town.

Money has to flow

Money has to move in order to be effective, and it’s exactly the attitude that we have to hold on to every red penny that is holding us trapped in this Global Poverty Consciousness.

The money is still there – it hasn’t gone anywhere… we’re just so caught up in the idea that there is not enough that we’re trying to squirrel everything away, preparing for a rainy day.

The money hasn’t disappeared, it’s just not moving… and the rainy day is already here.

Our answer, as a collective, to changing what’s going on in the world economically is to generate movement, to take action and start living our lives again. The longer we stay cocooned and wrapped up in our negativity, the longer it’s going to take us to work our way out of this slump.

It doesn’t have to be huge action – just 5% more than what we’re currently doing. Don’t go out there to get yourself into debt, but be more willing to pass it along with joy and gratitude, so that it blesses the life of the person you hand it to and can make its way back to you with joy and haste.

Be positive and take positive action that will improve not only your life, but the lives of those around you. Like the innkeeper, it will come back to you; it will benefit you in the long run and you will see a marked difference in your day-to-day life.

Top tips to develop & maintain a positive mindset & attitude

Develop realistic affirmations such as “I am grateful for each bill I pay because it means I have money with which to pay my bills”. If an affirmation or goal statement is too far from where you are now, your system just won’t accept it.

Use affirmations in places where you will see them often e.g. print them out on pieces of paper and stick them up on your walls, at eye level in your bathroom while seated, leave them in your car so you are constantly reminded of them while you’re driving and travelling. For an affirmation to become a habit, belief or pattern it needs to be ingrained into your system… you need to be brainwashed into that way of thinking, if you will. That takes repeated, continuous exposure, almost to the exclusion of everything else.

Go on a negativity fast. From avoiding the mainstream news to listening to a music station or CD instead of your local talk station, to eliminating negative people and circumstances form your life, removing the negativity is a necessary step to making space to be more positive and ensuring that you won’t have the positivity you’ve built up knocked out of you a soon as you re-enter your normal life.

Surround yourself by people and things that uplift you and make you feel good. Whether it’s meditation, going to church, joining a social community or even hiring a coach, there are a number of ways that you can ensure that the momentum keeps going once you’ve done the very hard work to get it started.

Be resilient. When you do get knocked down, or even pushed a step back, see it for what it is: one instance, one moment, one event. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get going again. Today might have been bad but tomorrow is another day and you can try again.

Remember, you were born to be a winner… but in order to win you must plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win. You also have to get up off the bench and get yourself properly into the game.
